Insight’s document tools offer publishers multiple ways to work with their long-form content using AI. One of those tools is Adapt, which allows users to transform a document according to a custom set of instructions.
What is the Adapt Tool?
Similar to translation, Adapt processes your document page by page and returns an adapted version of the original text—based on a prompt or custom instructions you enter.
Sample use cases include:
- Localizing text
- Simplifying language
- Copyediting and style changes
We recommend uploading a Word document into Insight if you want to use this tool. This makes reviewing and comparing the results easier.
Adapt Tool Settings
- Open a book, then click Actions > Document tools > Adapt
- Enter a title, and choose which pages of your document you want to adapt
- Click “Advanced options” to open the field where you can enter your custom instructions
Tips for Writing Adapt Instructions
Be precise: Include specific instructions on what AI should—and should NOT—change in this adaptation.
Use AI to help you write a prompt: Using AI Chat, describe how you want to adapt your document and ask AI to help you write an effective prompt.
Test and refine: It’s worth spending some extra time testing your prompt, making changes, and testing again. This extra time testing will save you hours of time editing the adapted document.
Test with a few pages: As you craft and test your prompt, choose a small page range. The process will run more quickly and you can compare results more easily. Once you have perfected your prompt, process the full document.
Sample Prompts for the Adapt Tool
Below are some sample prompts to help you get started with the Adapt tool.
You will need to test and customize these prompts for the book you’re working with, language, and use case.
Localize from UK to US English:
Localize the spelling and punctuation for American English. Do not make any other changes to the text.
Copyedit:
Copyedit this document to fully comply with the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS), including grammar, punctuation, spelling, names, terms, titles, numbers, abbreviations, capitalization, italics, and citation formatting. Make only necessary corrections without changing the original wording or meaning.
Audiobook script format:
Reformat this document into an audiobook script that marks lines for the narrator and each character. Do not change any text in the document.
Simplify college-level textbook chapter:
Adapt this college-level textbook chapter to make it suitable for 12-year-old students (Year 7/8) in the UK, following Key Stage 3 National Curriculum standards. The adaptation should simplify language and concepts while maintaining core academic integrity; and restructure content to align with KS3 learning objectives.
Review and Compare the Results
Download the file: Once processed, the adaptation will be generated as a Word document and available to download just above the Actions menu on the main document page.
Review: The adaptation file reflects the page numbers in the original document, making it easier for you to do side-by-side comparisons and editing.

Compare: We recommend using the “Compare Documents” feature in Microsoft Word to create a tracked changes version so you can see exactly what’s been changed in your document.
- Open Microsoft Word
- Click Review > Compare Documents
- Use the Original document selector to choose your original document.
- Use the Revised document selector to choose Insight’s adapted document.
- Click OK and you’ll see a tracked changes document which you can review.
