Insight automatically generates alt text, short captions, and detailed descriptions for the each image in your book or document.
So how you can you get this information out of Insight and into production? We have two options: Excel export and custom PDF report.
Excel Export
Insight can export image information—including image thumbnail, alt text, caption, description, page number on which the image appears, and questions (for textbook chapters)—into an Excel file for your design and production teams to use.
How to export image descriptions in Excel:
- From your book or document, click the Actions button
- Then choose Image Tools > Export images
- The Excel file will be generated and downloaded to your computer
Ways to use the data:
- Sort by “Document page” column to order the images by the page number on which they appear in the orignal document
- Search for terms or phrases to find specific content or descriptions
Understanding Insight’s image file names:
Use Insight’s image file names to help you locate a particular image within your original document and tag that image with Insight’s description, caption, or alt text.
- When Insight extracts an image from your document, it assigns an image name to that file.
- The format of the file name is something like: temp-28_1.png.
- This means the image is on page 28, and it’s the 1st image on the page.
- So if there are 4 images on page 28, the file names would be:
- temp-28_1.png
- temp-28_2.png
- temp-28_3.png
- temp-28_4.png
Custom PDF Report
All the content Insight creates about your books can be downloaded as a PDF report. You can select which fields are included in this report, and you can save your selections and report profiles to re-use.
Using this feature, you can select an images-only report. The resulting PDF will include all the images extracted from your document, as well as the corresponding captions and descriptions.
Here’s how to create this report:
- From your book or document, click the “Actions” button
- Then go to “Reports” — “Download report”
- In the popup window, de-select all fields except the images
- Click the download button
To save this selection as a report profile:
- After you’ve made your selections above, click the “Save to Profile” button at the bottom of the window
- Give your report profile a name like “Images” then click the disc icon to save it
- To use this profile, selecting it from the “Select profile” menu at the top right of the report window
