Insight can inject alt text directly into an EPUB, creating an accessible copy of your file with embedded image descriptions.
When to Use This Feature
Use this feature when you have an EPUB file and want to:
- Add alt text to images for accessibility compliance
- Create an accessible version of your ebook
- Generate a QA report to review the alt text
Steps
- Open your EPUB document in Insight
- Click Actions > Image Tools > Create Alt Text
- Under EPUB Processing Mode, select Create Accessible EPUB (Recommended)
- Configure optional settings:
- Automatically mark decorative images – Insight will identify images that don’t need alt text
- Generate QA report – Creates a report for reviewing the generated alt text
- Additional Instructions – Add custom guidelines for the AI (e.g., tone, terminology, formatting preferences)
- Click Start Extraction

Output
When processing completes, you’ll find two files in the Additional Files section of your document:
- Accessible EPUB – Your EPUB with alt text embedded in the file
- QA Report – A document listing all images and their generated alt text for review
Tips
- Use the QA report to verify alt text accuracy before distributing your accessible EPUB
- Add specific instructions if your book has content that requires specialized alt text
- The “Extract to Document” option is still available if you want to export alt text as a Word or Excel file without updating the EPUB file
